Patrick HeronLeeds, England, 1920 - 1999
Patrick Heron, in addition to being a painter, was a widely influential art critic. He believed in the autonomy of art schools, defended Picasso and Matisse in the face of English prejudice against modern art, and was eloquent in describing how color sensations govern his aesthetic. He had important friendships with T.S. Eliot, Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson, and Ivon Hitchens. In the 1970s prints present here, Heron concentrated on sensuous forms, saturated color and a decorative beauty that all hearken back to Matisse.
