Chryssa Vardea-MavromichaelAthens, Greece, 1933 -
American sculptor and painter of Greek birth. She studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris (1953–4) and at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (1954–5). Her first works were paintings and metal reliefs (e.g. the Cycladic Book series, 1955–6) depicting Japanese calligraphy and letters from the Roman alphabet, along with other images, such as arrows, as signs of human communication. Related to these concerns were paintings and sculptures that made use of typography and newsprint collages.
