Gotthard Johann KuehlLübeck, Germany, 1850 - 1915, Dresden

An important German Impressionist painter and etcher, Gotthardt Kuehl studied art under Diez at the Academy of Munich (1871-1879). In 1879 he left for Paris to study under and work with Fortuny. From then on Kuehl was an active participant in the Paris Expositions and was awarded medals for his art in 1884, 1888, 1889 and 1900. Kuehl returned to Munich around 1890 and established a studio there. In 1895 he accepted the post of Professor of Painting at the Dresden Academy of Arts and held that position until his death in 1915. For the last twenty years of his life, Gotthardt Kuehl was a major influence upon the course of art in Dresden. During this time he created many great paintings and etchings of Dresden views which are now housed in public museums in Breme, Bucharest, Konigsberg, Stuttgart and Dresden. Gotthardt-Johann Kuehl was a full member of the International Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, London, and the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris. The French government made him a Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur, in 1900, and a Grand Officer, in 1905. During his years in Paris (c. 1880 - 1890), Kuehl painted and etched a number of scenes in France, Belgium and Holland. Interieur mit Strickendem Madchen, is ,of course, a Dutch scene and thus in all probability dates from this decade. Besides being a most appealing interior scene, it also portrays Kuehl’s fine Impressionist handling of light and shade.
